What is Hydrostatic Body Composition Testing?

A method of testing body composition by submerging underwater.  Considered by most to be the GOLD STANDARD of body fat testing and used by other testing procedures to determine their accuracy and degree of error.

The body is made up of lean mass (muscle, bones, organs), water and fat.

Hydrostatic testing separates the lean mass from fat by weighing it underwater. Fat floats in water and lean muscle mass sinks in water.

Once the lean mass and the fat are calculated it can then determine the true overall health risks based off of real data rather than just weight on a scale or from a chart.

How often should I get tested?

We recommend purchasing multiple visits and depending on your goals you should test regularly every 60-90 days or sooner.

Why should I get my body composition tested?

Body Fat percentage is a good indicator of overall health. Having a higher body fat percentage can increase your chances of health-related diseases associated with obesity and body fat.

My weight hasn’t changed or has increased after starting a program.

Lean muscle and body fat can’t be measured accurately if you are just using a home scale. In most cases, body fat reduction, muscle increase, and water all play a huge role in overall weight and should be considered and measured before you change your diet or make changes with your trainer. “If it can be measured, it can be managed.”

Do I have to be a member of the gym to test?

In most cases, you don’t have to be a member of the gym. If it’s on the website and you can schedule your appointment you are invited to participate.

How long does the test take?

The total process in and out the door is 10 minutes and the test itself takes less than 60 seconds. It’s quick and painless. The water is comfortably heated and is filtered, chemically treated and refilled often.

Do I have to be completely submerged underwater?

No. Your nose and mouth will be outside the water at all times.

What do I wear?

Please wear tight-fitting clothing like a bathing suit or compression shorts and sports bra. Your hair and face will get wet so please make sure you bring a towel. Swim caps are required if you wear hair products. We provide new swim caps for $5. Shower caps don’t work.
